Summary of the 23 Things

To stay current in the library profession this exercise was terrific. I'm not a fan of blogging but as a librarian it is important for me to know what's going on. I love YouTube!! Zoho is amazing, and the image generators I tried were lots of fun. It was great that we had a 3 month period to complete the program. With so many staff members in HCPL doing it we had the ability to ask so many people for assistance. The Tech Fair was a great way to kick it off.

Every year or so we should do this type of thing. Maybe it would only 10 things or less. I would do it even if we were not receiving such a great gift- or perhaps all those who finish, if we do this again, can have their name put in for a drawing for Library Loot.

I will definitely be looking at the other things of the original 43.

#22

It's all about the access. Book format will always be with us but more and more people are turning to alternative formats. Public libraries need to have access to it all.

Podcasts

For those addicted to radio shows this is heaven. I'm not one of them but I would listen to a favorite author discuss his or her new book. This could be very useful in education. Something different then internet or print format.

Seinfeld Clip - 3x05 The Library - Mr Bookman

YouTube

I've been watching videos on YouTide for some time. If you are ever in a bad mood just find a video of kittens playing and you will feel better.

Web 2.0 awards list

What a GREAT list!! Bibli.com will come in handy, but my favorite was Etsy.com. A wide range of handmade items.

Onine Productivity Tools

Zoho is amazing. There are so many benefits. First how many times have a witnessed a patron who cannot access anything on their floppy because it was damaged. Or the software they used is not compatible with what we have.
One of the greatest benefits is the ability to work on group projects and the ease of accessibility to saved work.
This is really the way to go in the future. There are some ways to improve Zoho. It could be more intuitive.

Wiki Entry

I added a new page to the Learning 2.0 Sandbox wiki. It was very easy. I read through some of the "Favorites" lists.

Wikis

Someone should have thought of this sooner. Using Wetpaint one could create a wiki in no time. I like the idea of using a wiki for a staff intranet. In some cases instead of a blog a wiki can be created. I'm not that crazy about blogs. Wikis are more flexible.

The future of libraries

I hope that the library of the future will stay community minded. Based on the location of a public library services will differ. Libraries in poorer arrives are like lifelines to some people. Some things have worked and others really haven't taken off. A child's picture book in the e-book format just doesn't work. As I've been going through Library 2.0 I believe some things are far most useful then others. In ten years will people still be blogging? I'd rather have a conversation with a real person.

LibraryThing

This is a great idea! It could be useful for booklists too.

Online generators

So far I've spent the most time exploring the online generators. I created an M & M character and a crossword puzzle. I also like the Simpsonize Me generator. I tried it but I didn't have the right size photo.

Mash-ups

I created a trading card from a photo from when I was a child. It's quick and easy. Very cool!

Technorati

Technorati can be very helpful in finding something obscure or getting opinions on a certain topic. When trying to access posting I got the message "page not found"a few times.

Rollyo and Del.icio.us

Jackie has already added a delious link to our ref. PCs. (thanks Jackie!!) In the past the bookmarked sited were inconsistent from on PC to another, so this will be very helpful. Rollyo can be useful when one want's to access their favorites from any PC. I created a Rollyo for urban fiction.

Bloglines

I can see where this feature can be very useful. I added RSS feeds for LJ Prebut Alert, LJ Best Books, NYT Week in Review, and Urban Legends. I have being going to bloglines every few days and I will probably add more feeds.

First Posting

Aside from my blog containing postings about the 23 things, I hope to have an ongoing theme for my blog. As I approach 40, in just 2 years, I'm creating a list of things I would like to do in my life time. This seems like a good theme. The list will include places I would like to visit as well as on going projects like planting a vegetable garden. One of my fellow librarians has already been giving me tips on this one. I hope others will give me some input on what types of things they have experienced that would be list-worthy.
